Los Angeles, CA. (October 21, 2019) Chemical X (Chemicalx.co.uk) is a controversial British contemporary artist whose work shot to national prominence in the UK with artwork that reportedly depicted supermodel Cara Delevingne in an arrangement of 7,000 ecstasy pills. Now Chemical X, is bringing his unique examination of Britain’s drugs subculture to LA, exhibiting the ecstasy-themed work in the heart of West Hollywood at the famed Tower Records location on Sunset Blvd. He is anonymous and has never shown in a gallery, preferring to stage his own exhibitions which, to date, have been exclusively invitation only. This US debut exhibition, entitled CXLA, will be the first time ever that the general public will have an opportunity to view Chemical X’s ‘Ecstasy’ series first hand.
His CXLA launch party will feature a host of LA’s coolest artists, creatives, celebrities and musicians who will enjoy a private performance from legendary UK DJ Fatboy Slim in his first LA appearance in five years.
Chemical X says his work aims to reflect society back on itself through the prism of the artist in order to see the subject anew. His ‘Ecstasy’ series addresses the impact that MDMA has had on popular culture and includes “The Spirit of Ecstasy” a life-sized sculpture reported to be life modelled by model and actress Cara Delevingne and valued at more than $1m.
Chemical X said: “The ‘Ecstasy’ series is about potential suspended in an everlasting moment, allowing the viewer to see what has been, what is and what could be — all in the same instant. CXLA will be the first time I’ve exhibited publicly anywhere in the world. I hope LA will come to take it all in and leave on a high.”
In May 2019 Chemical X created an installation in the heart of LA’s Skid Row entitled, Skid Rodeo Drive - The Street Where Luxury & Poverty Meet. Twelve tents branded in the livery of Rodeo Drive’s top luxury brands for people experiencing homelessness in San Julian Street to live in.
Chemical X has previously worked on art projects alongside Banksy and Damien Hirst. His work is collected internationally but sold privately. Although he has never revealed his collectors, Delevingne is reported to be among his clients alongside Film Producers, TV moguls, International DJs, Financiers and Eastern European gangsters. His only ever appearance in front of the camera for Mixmag attracted over a million views but his identity remains a mystery.
