About

CHAUSSEE 36 PHOTO FOUNDATION is pleased to announce LITTLE PEOPLE, our first solo exhibition with Sebastian Kusenberg. The show, opening on the 24th of March, features Kusenberg’s most recent body of work.

The exhibition unveils Kusenberg’s playful convolute of wooden figures. These works depict human forms with unique characteristics and can be regarded as the negative articulation of his larger sculptures. Both series are carved into form with a chainsaw and present an alternative creative approach to his photographs found in the Collection De Gambs.

Kusenberg (*1958) started his formal education in Hamburg, where he received his diploma in Photography and Design. It later brought him to Berlin, where he has been residing since his time as Rebecca Horn´s Master Student at HDK. The fine art photographer developed a sustainable sculptural practice over the last 15 years. The bizarre forms and sharp edges of the works embody their production and entice the viewers’ imagination: Kusenberg repurposes the excess material and brings it to life through his humorous arrangements and his chosen title LITTLE PEOPLE.

Seltmann Publishers will release a book depicting Kusenberg’s new body of work. The book presents 50 photographs of the series by the artist and an eight-chapter essay by the renowned novelist Sten Nadolny. The humorous text reflects the spirit of the sculptures themselves.

The book will be presented alongside Kusenberg’s photographs for the exhibition LITTLE PEOPLE. The project, therefore, brings sculpture, photography and literature together.
