Charlie Trotman: Photographs of Lijiang, China
Corridor Gallery, Avenue Campus
24 January 3 February
Third year Media Production student Charlie Trotman will be showing a set of photographs taken during his recent visit to Lijiang in Southern China, undertaken as part of The University of Northampton's ongoing association with the region which was highlighted in last year's exhibition âChina's Forgotten Kingdom' at Avenue Gallery. The show will focus on street photography and aspects of the Naxi culture.
I see my camera as a way to enter people's lives and all the more reason to make travel into an art form. With this series, I was able to be completely immersed in the foreign culture, not just of Chinese culture but of the lesser-known ethnic minority of the Naxi. This was a major development for me as a photographer, where I felt I could finally capture subjects in a far less superficial manner than in some of my early work."
