Jacob van der Beugel is a ceramicist with a difference.
About
His permanent art installations for Chatsworth House and Huis ten Bosch, the royal palace in The Hague, explore contemporary developments in science and technology and our shifting notions of the self. The DNA Room in Huis ten Bosch has nearly 60,000 handmade ceramic blocks depicting the DNA of the King and Queen of the Netherlands.
London born, Jacob was apprenticed to potter Rupert Spira and ceramicist and author Edmund de Waal before setting up his studio in North Devon.
During several residencies at renowned scientific institutes, his work has wrestled with the complexities and paradoxes unearthed by science that art is perfectly positioned to explore. Not to be dazzled by science, instead he advocates that art serves as a bridge between science and the public. In the talk, he describes how hard-wearing materials such as ceramics and concrete can create artistic works and spaces that demand reflection.
