Join Sound and Silence exhibitors Copper Sounds for a workshop where you will make a 12" record out of clay.

About

This workshop offers an introduction into sound lathes, dubplates and cutting frequencies into clay. Participants will design their own sleeve and cut their own ceramic record.

The workshop will begin with a brief history of recorded sound and how it has developed and the evolution of vinyl records: From Édouard-Léon Scott's ‘drawing machine’ and Thomas Edison's phonograph to Volta Laboratory’s more familiar flat and round disks. Participants will then be given a demonstration of how to use a turntable as a drawing tool and create a personalised record sleeve of their own using various sounds, techniques and mediums.

The second part of the workshop is based on similar principles with participants creating their own dub plates - using turntables and our custom built sound lathes they will carve frequencies into blank clay discs.

At the end of the workshop your ceramic record will be fired and returned to MAKE Southwest for collection by participants after the workshop date.

Testimonial:

'I got messy hands! Also I learnt about the history of recorded music and the mechanics of it – mind boggling – brilliant!'

All equipment, materials and firing costs are included in the ticket price.

Participants must be aged 18 years or older.
