For more than a decade, Cathy Akers has examined the evergreen human desire to create a more perfect society—the utopian impulse. In her latest body of work, she examines the similarities between typical patterns of human interaction and patterns created by nature through a series of ceramic objects interwoven with cotton cording. Through the process of threading the cording through the apertures in the various ceramic objects, Akers hopes to call attention to the ways in which we are interconnected, or disconnected, with each other and with the natural world around us. The ceramic objects also function as bodies, alternately penetrated/destabilized and held up/supported by the cords.
Please note: The project will be open between 11am and 7pm on Saturday, Sept 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13. The artwork will be in the parking lot to the left of the building.
