Polish day and night of Zaduszki on 31 October  ( All Souls Day or Day of the Dead)  evokes different much warmer and respectful emotions and feelings towards the dead than those which come to mind with scary and spooky  spirit of Halloween invading Britain. On those autumnal grey days at the end of October and the beginning of November we, Poles  are visiting  cemeteries, sometimes traveling from distant cities, even other countries  in order to be with our ancestors, dead friends and cousins, to place flowers on their graves, to light candles – to connect with sometimes distant past, to belong and to remember. It is very moving, sacred and important day of the year, deeply rooted in our hearts and  souls, the day when we are all together.
