About
Stéphane Cauchy is an installation artist based in Lille, France. In his work he uses simple mechanical devices, occasionally in the form of improbable laboratory experiments. His pieces set up parallels between physical and psychic phenomena and examine concepts of time, space and unpredictability.
This exhibition is the development of a work originally made for Chapelle St Julienne, Le Petit Quivelly, France, 2008.
Nine buckets, interconnected by a pulley system are suspended from the roof above a large pool of water. Each bucket fills with water from a system of pipes and, at a critical moment, tips and empties suddenly releasing the contents into the pool below. Weight differences cause the buckets to rise and fall in unpredictable sequential movements suggesting the rhythm of church bells and ropes.
