For its New York gallery opening following an August break, Olde Hope will present “Carved from America’s Story: The Sculpture of Marshall Rumbaugh”.

For its New York gallery opening following an August break, Olde Hope will present “Carved from America’s Story: The Sculpture of Marshall Rumbaugh”. Rumbaugh, a Northeastern Pennsylvania native, is a sculptor in wood and is known for his polychromed carvings of historical figures done in a straightforward style inspired by American folk art. The artist has won prizes at The National Sculpture Society and the National Academy of Design and has been exhibited internationally. His portrait of Rosa Parks is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery and other works are in both museums and private collections.
Edwin Hild and Patrick Bell, owners of Olde Hope Antiques, have known and worked with Marshall for over 40 years. In 1982 they commissioned Marshall to carve a likeness of Benjamin Lay, considered America’s first abolitionist, based on the portrait they discovered at a local auction and later sold to the National Portrait Gallery. It was this piece that inspired Mr. Rumbaugh to investigate American history for subjects to represent in his sculpture, which he continues to do today.
The current exhibit in the Olde Hope gallery includes eleven recent works along with four early works from private collections to show the artist’s history. As with previous exhibits in the gallery, the artwork will be presented in conjunction with early painted furniture and folk art from Olde Hope’s extensive inventory.
