Carol Rama (Turin 1918–2015) is one of the most unusual artistic personalities of the 20th century.
About
Her creative period spans more than 70 years. The artist, who was present in the art world in Italy throughout her life, only gained an international reputation in old age and posthumously. In 2003 she was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for her life's work, and in recent years in particular she has honored important museums such as the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris or the New Museum in New York with extensive retrospectives.
In the Gutshaus Steglitz with its small, private rooms, Rama's late graphic work is presented in a first institutional solo exhibition in Berlin, thanks to an impressive boost in vitality from the elderly artist. An extensive bundle of etchings was created from the early 1990s. The exhibition focuses on a selection of sheets from the cycles Venticinque Aquaforti di Carol Rama, Keaton Idilli, Personaggi, Seduzioni, Cadeau, Malelingue, Feticci and Mucca Pazza. In terms of motif and style, the works are very different, from the fairytale-like works in the portfolio of Venticinque Aquaforti and partly Art Nouveau delicate Seduzioni to the reduced, minimalist Cadeau etchings to the organic Mucca Pazza collages. A special feature is to be mentioned.
In her creative urge, Carol Rama colored individual leaves in lively colors, mostly watercolor, and occasionally even used unusual substances and materials such as nail polish.
