“Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break.” – William Shakespeare (1623)

Can you see my Grief? is an interactive multimedia installation that presents at its core the topic of grief.  It invites viewers to explore feelings of absence, loss, sadness, heaviness and absurd humor through everyday domestic objects and tasks with the aim of removing the inhibitions, awkwardness and embarrassment usually associated with this subject matter.

Textile artist Liria Pristine weaves together the story of her loss using a variety of media including text, photography, video and performance within her specialism of knitting. She bares her grief in order to offer the public her own narrative as a starting point. As a 9-year-old child trying to navigate grief on her own, she became an expert at comforting the adults in the room who could neither address nor respond to her childhood bereavement alongside the taboo surrounding the death of a young mother.

Yoga for Grief, a collaboration between the artist and the producer, musician and performer Laima Leyton, is a happening taking place at the Private Reception. It combines optical illusion affecting text and in-built weights in knitted textiles designed for a series of yoga movements. In this way, it proposes a shared language to tackle the visibility of grief and its feeling as a bodily experience.

Liria Pristine is a Canadian textile artist who began her training at Central Saint Martins. During her studies she took an internship with one of the largest and oldest knitwear manufacturers in Mauritius, Floreal Knitwear, so she could gain insight on the manufacturing process in its entirety, from yarn development and design through to production logistics and quality control.

She graduated from CSM with her collection being selected as part of the university’s esteemed Press Show and soon afterwards was featured in i-D magazine, which hailed her as part of the “new breed of wool-toting rebels”.   Her textile journey took her to São Paulo, Brazil where she worked for top fashion houses including Alexandre Herchcovitch and Ellus, where she was taken on to design and produce bespoke pieces for São Paulo Fashion Week.

She returned to London and worked for the designer Bora Aksu, who commissioned her for several seasons to create his collections’ millinery for London Fashion Week. She has also worked on creative sampling for Louis Vuitton.

More recently she has been knitting for the film industry and has worked under Oscar-winning costume designers such as Alexandra Byre, who hired her to come on board for Murder on the Orient Express, creating textiles for principal actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Judy Dench. She rejoined Alexandra and her team on the film Mary Queen of Scots, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design. She has worked on newly released films such as The AeronautsCats, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, and Autumn de Wilde’s Emma. She has recently finished her tenure as Chief Knitwear on Death on the Nile, which will be released in 2020. She is currently in talks about more exciting film projects. – https://www.instagram.com/liriapristine/

In the past 12 years she has been DJing around the globe with Iggor Cavalera in Mixhell, as well as producing their own music and remixing and collaborating with artists such as Moby, Buraka Som Sistema, and Diplo. Last year most of her time was spent touring, playing keys and backing vocals with Soulwax. Laima has recently released her solo debut album with The Vinyl Factory.  – https://www.instagram.com/laimaleyton/
