Camilla Emson: Heart as Informer

As part of the Art Licks Weekend, Stop, Look, Listen! performance programme, Camilla Emson will perform her new work, Heart as Informer at MOCA London on Sunday 6th October, 3pm. Emson's multi-disciplinary practice investigates the internal and external effects of making that is resonant with the effects of touching and being touched. The rawness and fragility of Emson's sewn canvases and blown glass vessels that are made using found tools calls upon an innate body intelligence and involves intimate processes of repair, embodiment and re-configuration. The acquisition of her body and new materials imbues the work with a rare sense of discovery and presence. With a recent training in Dance Movement Psychotherapy and Somatic Experiencing and a background in painting and sculpture, Emson's performance work considers the body as a vital informant. She accesses the body's capacity to self-regulate yet also encounter or accumulate blockages like a storehouse. Influenced by the work of Marina Abramovich, Emson's re-appropriation of her body undresses the false comforts of modern society to reveal a delicate reality. In Heart as Informer Emson investigates the transforming performance of her heart in relation to her moving audience. The rawness of this work emerges through the combination of Emson being faced with uncertain results and a refusal to conceal what is usually private. This exploration of the individual transposes itself to the collective and engages with the audience on a dual symbiotic level.
