CACHÉ: clandestine perspectives

The show is comprised of a collection of artworks showcasing expressions of the crowd and the individual, inspired by the unity and distinct nature of underground movements. Through showcasing both local and international artists, societal subcultures are brought to the fore. The illegality of public space and the criminalisation of human touch, brought about by COVID-19, channelled movement into the unobserved. There is no surveillance. It is under the radar.

The narrative condenses within a public space that has been inhabited by those that do not adhere to the rules. The artworks on show demonstrate the range of possibilities and energy that collective action can project, thus altering our interaction with materials, lighting, and physical sites. Through interaction, we perform. A place becomes a space.

Through a combination of sculpture, photography, sound installation and video, Deptford does Art will play host to an assemblage of artists hailing from Belarus, Mexico, Czech Republic, UK, Spain, France and many more. What draws such a diverse collection of backgrounds together, is the universal desire to express and feel in even the most trying of circumstances. With restrictions being lifted around the world, the time is ripe for introspection, and to apply what we have learnt to the dawn of a new era. Participating in the show are Zafar Ahmad, Nina Bumbalkova, Diego Torres Cantú, Agáta Hošnová, Elissa Lenoir, Pavel Miskevich, Ellis Warren, and as a collective: Lara Baillargeon, Rose Bartels, Nicholas Bennett, Isabela Chipon, Laura Inácio and Sheng-Jung.

Lara Bronner (*2000) is a second-year student, currently completing a BA in Curating at Goldsmiths and the secretary of the Visual Cultures Society. She is interested to learn how to foster relationships with artists, and to bring their narratives alive. She is focused on exploring the power of politics in art, surveillance, gender, and gallery education.

Palina Shturma (*2001) is a second-year student of the BA Curating course at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is the president of the Visual Cultures Society. Palina is interested in phenomenological studies, spacial operation, sound production, digital realms in the arts and imaginative approaches to gallery education.

Adrianna Marciniec (*2000) is a second-year student of the BA Curating course at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is the treasurer of the Visual Cultures Society. Adrianna has a background in artmaking and design, and is interested in visual practice through human communication and engagement. She explores the topics of boundaries and morality through the lens of the aesthetics of the everyday.
