An exhibition of new photography celebrating Southampton’s post-war architecture. Photographers Greg Moss, James Newell and Daniel Cane capture Southampton’s best post-war buildings as chosen by the writer Owen Hatherley.

About

Contrary to popular opinion Southampton has had some real architectural gems built in the years following it’s recovery from World War II.

Owen Hatherley is a writer and journalist from Southampton who writes primary on architecture, culture and politics. He has written for amongst others, The Guardian, New Statesman and bdonline. He is the author of several books including; Landscapes of Communism: A History Through Buildings, A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain, Militant Modernism, and A New Kind of Bleak: Journeys Through Urban Britain.

Greg Moss is a locally based photographer specialising in architectural photography and working primary between Hampshire and London. He has previously exhibited his series, the Works, which gained popularity online at Solent Showcase Gallery – www.gregmoss.co.uk

James Newell is based in St Denys, Southampton. He has over 30 years experience working as a professional photographer spanning a multitude of different subjects including advertising, music, theatre, art, industrial and architectural photography – www.jamesnewell.com

Daniel Cane is a London based photographer who works as an industrial designer. Daniel shoots primarily architectural and street photography on a multitude of different film cameras – www.danielcane.com

 

Talk by Owen Hatherley

Sunday 10th January 2016 at 6pm
Alongside the new photographs to be exhibited in the phone boxes there will be a talk by Owen Hatherley about Southampton’s post-war architecture.

Places are limited so please make sure you book an advance ticket on our eventbrite page.

Online Exhibition
There will also be an online exhibition of buildings that have been demolished, adapted or mutilated.

Brutalust Photo Booklet
There is short booklet featuring photos from the exhibition by Greg Moss, Daniel Cane and James Newell and with text by Owen Hatherley. This will be available to purchase on the opening night and at Owen’s talk as well as through our website.
