A platform for artists to be as radical, experimental and political with their work and mediums as they wish to be, drawing from their lived experiences as South Asian people.
About
£brown (Brown Pound) is the perceived purchasing power of British Asian/Black communities, that a lot of advertisers, companies and agencies tap on. Like any other capitalistic model, it’s a cycle of working to earn and purchase, leading to the commodification of brown identities and cashing on brown labour to sell, well, chai tea latte.
£brown is a satirical commentary on the same. An attempt to spend brown pounds on brown artists. (Hear that, prime minister?)
About the showcase
This is something that we wish we could do in our home country. Fascism and conservative governments in the subcontinent, extremist groups and conservative masses, have made expression through art difficult and unsafe. Oftentimes, it’s not just the criticism that gets censored, but also stories of queer joy, female sexuality and pleasure.
This showcase is a platform for artists to be as radical, experimental and political with their work and mediums as they wish to be, drawing from their lived experiences as South Asian people.
