In 1965 designs for the British Road Sign appeared on our streets and have occupied an important role in our lives for the last 50 years.
About
Designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert they standardised the road network, produced two new typefaces: Transport and Motorway, and created many of the signs we see today.
To mark this 50th anniversary leading artists and designers including Sir Peter Blake, Jonathan Barnbrook, Sir Kenneth Grange, Neville Brody and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners have transformed the familiar circle, triangle and square signs, instructing audiences to stop, look and consider the aesthetic rather than the content.
An exhibition that partially escapes our gallery and sees the signs take up residence along Humber Street and into the town centre, we encourage you to take a walk and identify all 80 signs.
