This summer at David Messum Fine Art, we present the 50th edition of our annual British Impressionist exhibitions at the gallery in St. James’s.
About
In the autumn of 1974, David Messum opened 'A Breath of Fresh Air' at his first gallery at London End, Buckinghamshire. This was the beginning of a long line of annual exhibitions showcasing British Impressionism and Newlyn School paintings together to shine a light on the Avant Garde artists of the late nineteenth century who were well overdue for a scholarly re-appraisal. Today, David Messum's name has become synonymous with the period and with artist’s who’s historical and market values have escalated dramatically in recent years.
Throughout June and July, the gallery will reflect on our heritage by presenting a major exhibition of paintings, including those of the Staithes, Newlyn and St. Ives artist colonies, many of whom are now celebrated as being at the vanguard of British Modernism. Considering these artists in parallel, the show will demonstrate the development of the post-Impressionist movement into the twentieth century and the establishment of the post-war modern movement.
