Brita Granstrom: Life in Landscape. Lapland, Sweden and Northumberland

About

If there were an alternative to the Turner prize devoted to what Turner actually did, which was to work outdoors in all weathers, Brita Granström would be a serious contender for it. Photographs of her caught in the act of painting show her totally concentrated and oblivious to anything else around her including the cold. The way in which she handles paint is reminiscent of Winifred Nicholson, and whatever the subject, the underlying purpose is always the same: the energy of nature finds its equivalent in sweeps and scribbles of paint, shapes and colours — in which one senses nature burgeoning, decaying and indefatigably renewing itself
