AboutBrian Whelan returns to the UK, after nearly a year abroad, with new work to exhibit at Mandell's Gallery, Elm Hill, Norwich. As a son of immigrants, Brian Whelan is no stranger to cultural dilemmas. Spending time in the US with his American wife has given him another address, but the drive of his work remains the same: a search for a spiritual and metaphorical home, which finds some understanding and consolation in the subjects he chooses to paint. Mythical, metaphorical, comical, full of puns and anachronisms, Whelan can ignite sparks by rubbing the sublime and the ridiculous. His epiphanies act like the punch line of a joke, surprising us with a deeper understanding of both the mysterious and the common place.
