About
Never are we more limitless than when are children. Our imaginations are free of reality’s anchor and we gleefully color outside the lines to create defiantly simple and unique images. Our youthful creative process centers purely on visceral visual pleasure: fun colors, favorite animals, and uncomplicated shapes. As we age, our world begins to shrink. We start to prefer complexity, muted color palettes and academic rules about composition and perspective to the juvenile joys of boundless artmaking.
Many artists, like the ones in this show, are able to take the freedom found in their younger years of creativity and evolve it into an otherworldly surrealist escape that ties both the dreamlike aesthetic of youth with the analytical perspective that comes with adulthood. Surrealism in art has always held the contradictory ability to weave the real and unreal together, resulting in a poignant statement with tangible implications.
The work in this show provides both an escape from the plain and mundane and a shift in perspective. ‘Fun’ is sometimes seen as a lesser descriptor by the art world as we tend to view seriousness and sadness as the only worthwhile expression of the soul. While those are important parts of the human experience, joy is a radical form of protest in a world that seeks so often to control and minimize. With this show, we invite you to indulge in your daydreams, visualize in technicolor and fall deeper into the rabbit hole of your imagination.
Andrea Guzzetta is a Los Angeles based artist originally from Wisconsin. She graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design with a BFA in Sculpture. Described as 'Lisa Frank without her Xanax', Andrea's distinct style blends the traditional techniques of classical painting with a pastel aesthetic. She uses her bold cheery palette to explore themes of intimacy, vulnerability, and the hidden magic of small moments.and works in the greater Los Angeles/Long Beach area.
Marisa Sayler is a Southern California artist who works primarily in sculpture, drawing and painting. She graduated magna cum laude from the Atlanta College of Art in 2005 with a BFA degree in Painting, and earned an MFA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from California State University, Fullerton in 2009. Marisa has exhibited nationally and throughout Southern California. She lives and works in the greater Los Angeles/Long Beach area.
Devon Walz is a mixed media artist and muralist based in Santa Ana, CA. Her self-study of visual art began while earning a BA in Philosophy at UC Berkeley. Known for her use of bright colors, nostalgic elements and otherworldly settings, the development of her work has been influenced by her interests in psychology and world-building, as well as growing up as a female in the 90s. Devon has exhibited her work throughout California, worked with clients such as Vans and WorkWell, collaborated on a variety design projects and her pieces are held by collectors around the globe. In addition to her studio practice she teaches workshops and hosts conversations about all things being a working artist on her podcast, ART + MAGIC.
Rachel Silva is an artist currently based in LA. Her work is based in femininity and fluid sexuality, with a focus on small moments and sensations we feel with partners and ourselves. She is always trying to capture fleeting feelings and preserve them like pinning a bug to paper. She is most excited about the vulnerability in her work, and experimenting with new styles and mediums. She has a mainstay of working with colored pencil on wood panel, but she loves branching out and trying new things all the time.
