BORN FEMALE is an exhibition uniting five distinct mixed-
media artists, ages 25-71.
About
Compelled to confront female abuse, conceivable in a lifetime: from childhood to sexual maturity,
adulthood and political oppression, and finally, freedom. By damaging objects — dresses, transparent boxes, metal crates, wooden frames — the artists start their work. Transforming the objects — breaking, burning, cutting, encaging — gives artistic form to female pain. The powerful use of unconventional
materials — polyurethane, metal, wire, wood, sand, fabric, fire — depicts devastating truths of female disempowerment.
