Boris ELDAGSEN : vernissage at HANGAR 7826 Saturday, May 18, 2-5 p.m.
18 May 2024 – 26 May 2024
HANGAR 7826
Montreal, Canada
Come and see for yourself the photo that made the world news in 2023.
Boris Eldagsen is one of the first German photographers to experiment with image creation using artificial intelligence. In April 2023, I contacted Boris Eldagsen to ask him to exhibit at Hangar 7826. He accepted my invitation. A few days after our e-mail and WhatsApp exchanges, he was on his way to London to receive an award he had won at the Sony World Photography Awards for his photograph The Electrician. On the spot, he refused the award, because his image was not a "real" photo but one generated by artificial intelligence. The world's media reported the story. With this stunt, Eldagsen wanted to spark a debate on the ethical issues surrounding the rapid development and repercussions of AI.
This image and others by the same artist will be presented at HANGAR 7826 between May 18 and 26. In the years to come, this image is likely to become a landmark in the history of photography, and will probably feature in photography textbooks on the subject of artificial intelligence.
The artist will be on site every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, for the duration of the exhibition.
