Bookbinding for Artists and Designers

About

Based in some of the best facilities in London, this short course gives you an introduction to bookbinding. It's perfect if you have little or no experience in making handmade books, or if you want a refresher. You will follow a series of step-by-step practical demonstrations covering the basic principles of various bookbinding techniques, including a Western style case-bound book and Eastern style stab stitch binding, to build up your confidence and skills in simple bookbinding. This is a practical course giving the first steps to bookbinding, building up craft skills and expertise to produce professionally finished one-off books or limited editions. It will be of particular interest to artists and designers who want to create books of their own work. After completing the course you will be able to: Use four different sewing methods to produce different types of books Create simple handmade books using binding techniques including oriental style and Coptic stitch Turn you own imagery and text into one-off books or limited editions, perfect for portfolios or presents Upon completing the course may want to go on and develop your artistic skills in Creative Bookbinding for Artists and Designers. Level This course is perfect for those with little or no experience. Tutor With a background in design, Jane Drinkwater went on to study traditional craft bookbinding at The London College of Printing, now London College of Communication. With a passion for handmade books she currently divides her time between making bookworks and boxes to commission and teaching creative bookbinding using age-old techniques. Students at LCC have been enjoying having their eyes opened to the possibilities of paper structures in her classes for several years.
