About

The show will comprise of a selection of tapestry wall-hangings, all rug-punched* by Hansen, using woolen yarn on canvas. It will explore his new foray into paintings, plus a number of smaller drawings, mixed-media sculptures and excluvisve, printed throws.

*Rug-punching = A tufting gun is similar to a hand held sewing machine, it just looks alot more like an actual gun. First you thread the needle of the gun with yarn, working in one colour at a time and in lines, a bit like a printer. A big fluffy printer that works backwards. The gun pushes yarn through the fabric to the opposite side, creating what people see, whilst I work on the reverse’. - Says Hansen.

Hansen draws on surreal, scenic images and bold colours inspired by a recent trip in Mexico: “I moved out to Mexico last year having become a stagnant pond of a man. Mexico is obviously an incredibly creative, beautiful place but it wasn’t so much these visuals that inspired me but how dope everyone was there. I was so pumped on the whole thing and when I’m pumped, I make my best work.’

One can’t help but be reminded of South America’s sense of ‘alegria’, that imbues that part of the world. This playfulness spills into Hansen’s work and is notably, one of the key sin-orations behind a lot of his imagery: “On the whole I’m putting on a show because it’s f***ing fun ... when people leave the show, I hope I’ll have spread the seeds of my work and opened people’s eyes to a style that’s driven by amusement”. Say’s Hansen, who has previously discussed his avidity for people embracing silliness, including his father who has acted as a big inspiration in his process.

This show is a homage to the weird and wicked.’ - Teddy Hansen
