In two playful, expansive installations, the exhibition tells the story of the human species on planet earth.
About
Matthias Böhler (*1981 Aachen) and Christian Orendt (*1980 Sighișoara, Romania) have been working together as a duo since 2008. With wit, irony and black humor, they make the switching and ruling of humans the subject: how we waste resources that have formed over millions of years, how we have already destroyed over 2.5 billion hectares of forest or wiped out over 60 percent of all vertebrates.
In the exhibition, a gigantic, ape-like animal serves as a source of various “raw materials” for zealous work teams. In the center of the second installation, a walk-in spaceship in the form of a lotus flower invites you to explore. Here, a sequence of nine images, 2020's The Sweet Certainty of Deliverance from the Darkness that Surrounds Us, promises nothing less than "the sweet certainty" of deliverance from the darkness that surrounds us. A ghostly dirge of extinct animals summons a mysterious power that miraculously rids the planet of danger. This series of images is part of the collection of the Berlinische Galerie and can be seen in the museum for the first time.
