Bob Robinson — An Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture

Surface Gallery hosts the first solo exhibition of Bob Robinson in it's newly refurbished top-floor Project Space. Bob Robinson is one of Nottingham's leading painters. He has created an extraordinary body of work and earned the respect and affection of many in the local arts community. He is currently being treated for cancer. This exhibition has been organised to celebrate his work, to show the appreciation of his friends and to introduce his work to a wider audience. Bob Robinson's earlier work contains wry observations of the denizens of Nottingham town. However, as his work enters the 1980's, the mood changes and he paints some stunning lampoons of the consumer culture of the period. This satirical mood takes an even darker turn as the decade passes and his caricatures enter their most extreme and grotesque phase. It would be politic to say that the darkness of Bob's paintings is always lightened by humour but this is not always true. Be prepared for some uncompromising images. Latterly he has taken to working directly with objects, making assembled sculpture. These pieces have his trademark eye of detail, his uncanny workmanship and the weird, organic aesthetic of his grotesque paintings. The Bob Robinson Exhibitions will run in two parts, with part one launching on Friday 24th October, 6-8pm. It will run in parallel to Surface Gallery's sixth East Midlands Graduate Project in the Gallery Space. Part two opens on Friday 28th November, 6-8pm.
