Herb Schmitz was born near Dusseldorf and started his career in photography in the UK when he arrived here in the early 1960’s working for the Durch Agency, KAPA which centered on the entertainment industry.
About
As such, he photographed all the musical giants of the time, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie along with classical musicians, composers, actors and politicians. One of his iconic photographs of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is presented in this exhibition.
He worked with many companies on their advertising campaigns and there is also included a portfolio of images created for his client, Sanderson, taken in the early 1970’s.
Several of the images from his archive ‘Seascapes’ are also shown. This theme began in 1979, collaborating with Marguerite Smith, whilst working for the Cruise Company Norwegian American Line, continuing with Cunard and the Royal Caribbean Line.
The main part of this exhibition are the images BLUMEN, a series of portraits of flowers which have been digitally manipulated and printed on silk, again collaborating with Marguerite Smith. They have been working in this medium for the last three years and the series is continually enlarging. There are three formats available – large, medium and small. All images are available in all sizes.
