About

In the photo and video works of BLAK. Forced into images six influential, committed artists show poignant, challenging yet also humoristic images. All six of them mock the distorted image forced upon them because of their appearance, gender or Aboriginal descent.

How are you perceived in a world in which concepts such as nationality and ethnicity become increasingly blurred? Is your identity defined by your origins, upbringing and skin colour? BLAKalso addresses the question of how this relates to discrimination and racism in Australia, issues which have also led to heated debate in Europe. The artists take on preconceived images of the themselves to the point of absurdity or reverse them: how do you see the images they display?

The concept of the exhibition was developed in cooperation with Kosmopolis Utrecht.
