About

The Birth Rites Collection is holding a symposium to explore the visual representations of childbirth. The symposia will introduce the Birth Rites Collection and discuss the social, political and artistic implications of work around the subject of childbirth in contemporary art. The speakers on the day range from academics, artists and curators and will deal with: Sexuality and childbirth; Changing art practice post childbirth; Taboos and censorship around the representations of childbirth; The implications a lack of the representation of childbirth has on the status of women within society; The male perspective on childbirth. The symposium will coincide with the Mary Kelly retrospective at The Whitworth Art Gallery. There will also be an evening reception after the Whitworth Symposium at Salford University in the Midwifery department to present the old and new acquisitions and films. Tickets will are available separately for this event but symposium ticket holders will enter for free.
