AboutWilliam Turnbull, one of the most important living British artists, is exhibiting a selection of his work at Waddington Galleries in June in William Turnbull: Beyond Time.
The exhibition will feature eight previously unseen paintings dating from 1957 to 1960, an important and influential period in Turnbull's work. A large selection of work dating from the late 1950s to the 1990s tracking Turnbull's development as a sculptor will also be on show.
Turnbull brought the avant-garde creative scenes of Paris and New York to the staid British art world. A close contemporary of Giacometti and Brancusi and later Rothko and Barnett Newman, Turnbull was a key member of the Independent Group besides Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi, changing British artists' approach to their work. Rebel, independent, multi-disciplinarian, collaborator and one of the art world's respected living artists Turnbull is the antithesis of the contemporary art world's focus on commercialism and trends.
