About
February marks the 13th queer history month in the UK since it was instated in 2003 in the wake of the abolishment of section 28. Join us for the opening of the exhibition entitled: Beyond the Binary by photographers Geoff Brokate & Kaye Martindale. Beyond The Binary is a photographic series that concerns itself in the evolving role of gender and sexuality within culture. Geoff and Kaye sought out ‘non-conventional’ families that reconfigure our understanding of how a family is made up. Beyond the Binary offers a focused look at the ways in which the traditional family model has changed in the UK to encompass same-sex couples, non-binary partnerships and transgender families.
This very special opening will include performances from the SPIT! Collective. The group, made up of artist Carlos Motta, art writer John Arthur Peetz and choreographer & dancer Carlos Maria Romero. They reflect on gay politics and manifestos post 1960 in order to evoke questions about LGBTQUIA+ experience today.
There will be complimentary drinks. This event is free to the public. (We will be collecting donations for the UK's first LGBTIQ+ Homeless/Crisis Shelter & Community Hub the outside project.)
