Pictorum Gallery London is delighted to present Between the Bridge and the Door, an exhibition that brings together new paintings by Sam King, Henry Gibbs, Oriele Steiner, Emanuel de Carvalho, and Kora Moya Rojo.

Each of the five exhibiting artists explores the articulation and meaning of ‘perceived identity’ through a variety of diverse methods. They question a range of interconnected themes such as gender, humanism, digital manipulation, and in particular examine what it is to withhold judgement, and forced interpretation.

The title Between the Bridge and the Door refers to sociologist Georg Simmel’s elaboration of the bridge and door as modes of transition to analyse the transitional space between past, present and future identities. In this exhibition, transition is at the core. There is an intentional ambiguity created by each artist – the forms are open to analysis, often reveal-ing the viewer ’s biases and impressions.

Works by the selected artists share an aesthetic synergy, despite their vastly different subject matters, colour palettes and even scale. However, each artist utilises an aspect of technology in their processes, creating a fresh perspective on form. The resulting works are smooth, sometimes hyper-real, capturing the viewer with their magnetism, counteracting cur-vilinear lines with hard, straight edges. Thus, the surfaces reveal themselves to be vibrant, and often entrancing. The aim for the exhibition is to encourage the viewer to withhold the need to dictate a subjects gender, identity or even whether or not they are human. The artists create space on the canvases which allow for multiple interpretations and understandings to be felt.
