Berlin University of the Arts: The President’s Fine Arts Award 2020

About

The winners of The President’s Fine Arts Award 2020 of the Berlin University of the Arts, Liane Aviram and Marlene Hundt, will show their works at Galerie Nord | Kunstverein Tiergarten from May 12, 2021.

Liane Aviram explores the tension between documentary and fiction in installations, digital art and films. In her works, which emerge from a feminist and diasporic perspective, she seeks to audit the use of natural resources within every day products and the relation of physical labor and capital. She is currently using film to explore the affects of Big Data in farming and the collective understanding of the natural world.

Marlene Hundt explores the process of image-making. In her cross-genre, site-specific installations, she combines painting, drawing, and text with everyday objects, sensitively combining them to open up surprising associative spaces. Her narrative and stage-like arrangements are inspired by music, theater, film, and literature. An important component of her artistic practice is the associative linking of individual visual elements to create poetic and ambivalent compositions.

The President’s Fine Arts Award at the Berlin University of the Arts has been awarded annually since 1997 to three outstanding master students in the College of Fine Arts. In addition to an exhibition, each award includes a monographic catalog.

In 2020 the jury consisted of: Prof. Dr. Norbert Palz, President of the Berlin University of the Arts; Prof. Heike-Karin Föll, Professor of Drawing at the Berlin University of the Arts; Dr. Joanna Kiliszek, Art Historian; Dr. Julia Wallner, Director of the Georg Kolbe Museum; Dr. Marc Wellmann, Artistic Director at the Haus am Lützowplatz; Veronika Witte, Artistic Director of Galerie Nord | Kunstverein Tiergarten.

With this exhibition, Galerie Nord is once again a partner institution of one of the most prestigious awards of the Berlin University of the Arts. The aim of the cooperation is to build a bridge between the educational institution and the art business. Due to the pandemic, the exhibition of the award winners had to be postponed last year.

In accordance with infection control measures, the gallery is currently closed, which is why the exhibition opening, the artist talk and the guided tour will be held online. In addition, the exhibition will be made available to the general public as a 3D tour on the Kunstverein Tiergarten website.
