About
Newman (1914-1984) came to the ruins of Berlin in July 1945 with the British Army Royal Engineers as a member of the occupying forces and left as a friend of the city.
As an engineer, he played a part in restoring the city’s infrastructure and as a member of the International Committee for Construction and Housing under Planning Commissioner Hans Scharoun, he helped to develop the first plan for a new Berlin.
His pictures bring to life the terrible effects that the war had on Germany, which are hardly perceptible now, seventy years later. However, his haunting colour portraits in particular also reveal the courage of the younger generation who rebuilt the city.
