Presented in rotation to the Akademie's six sections, this year the Berlin Art Prize: Grand Prize 2018 is being awarded to Thomas Demand of the Visual Arts Section.

About

The sculptor and photographer produces true-to-life paper models from images in the media, and then photographs his own paper models. Demand's photograph of his replica of the Oval Office even appeared on the cover of the New York Times Magazine, which is to say in the real-life world of media he usually relies on to serve his own purposes.

Recipients of other Berlin Art Prize awards are: Polish painter and video artist Dominik Lejman (Visual Arts Section); Swiss architect Philippe Block (Architecture Section); Ukrainian composer Anna Korsun (Music Section); novelist Daniela Danz (Literature Section); Australian director Simon Stone (Performing Arts Section); and photographer and video installation artist Christoph Brech (Film and Media Art Section).

The Berlin Art Prize was founded by the Berlin City Council in 1948 to commemorate the 1848 March Revolution. The awards are presented by Berlin's Mayor and Senator for Culture and Europe Klaus Lederer and Akademie President Jeanine Meerapfel.
