Hannah Murgatroyd
Hannah Murgatroyd is a painter and draughtsman whose works are 'island spaces of the imagination': a painted and drawn world inhabited by a cast of protagonists. These form an idiosyncratic canon of desire, whose genesis springs from a history of the body told through high art, popular culture and personal narrative. Representation here opens a window on to a version of the world, one eroticised, ambiguous and deeply engaged with surface.
She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005, where she won the Man Drawing Prize, going on to the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School. From 2009 she lived in Berlin, being awarded a residency at the Spinnerei in Leipzig. On returning to the UK in 2014, Murgatroyd won the Exeter Contemporary Open and became a faculty member of the Royal Drawing School.
She has exhibited widely and been awarded residencies in the UK, Germany and Italy. In 2016 she had a solo show, Leisured Bodies, at the Roper Gallery in Bath and will have a solo show at Exeter Phoenix in summer 2017.
