First exhibition of intaglio prints by Bartek Krząszcz, a Polish artist who studied at Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland and now lives in London.

About

Born in 1990 in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Study at Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice from 2009, diploma at the Intaglio Printing Studio of Professor Jan Szmatloch in 2015.

"My main focus is traditional print, painting, drawing and sculpture. In my work I try to connect traditional technique based on technology and realistic image with more contemporary technique of digital printing on different materials like PVC with 3D surface.

Works which I exhibit here have two cycles of printings. Both cycles have four copies made in traditional intaglio techniques like aquatint, etching, mezzotint, soft varnish, etc.

Those printings are the symbolic portraits of my dead Grandfather, which at the first impression look like still lifes or winter landscapes obsered from some dark rooms.
In my private reaserch of funeral art from past centuries, I found some connections for my ideas. In the XVI century in Poland and before, in antient Egypt and Rome, we can find groups of portraits of dead people; in Egypt we have famous portraits from Fayum, in Polish baroque they are Sarmatian coffin portraits and in antient Rome sculpture portraits of dead people. Also, in my research, I found a couple of symbolic paintings of still life which are not just still life but a group of attributes of a person who died, someone famous or some saints. But still, in my reaserch, examples of that kind of still life portraits was quite rare.

It was important in my path, to establish and recognize that some connection with my printing work, are baroque still lifes with 'Memento Mori' motif. Famous and important subject in art history which recognized the vanity of life and future death, that awaits all of us. this was important for my ideas and formed a connection of my work cycles with the history of art, especially, Polish history. After Poland's loss of independence in XVIII century and many uprisings in XIX century, very important if not dominating Polish art history, is the funeral motive. It exists in literature, music, poems, and of course in fine arts. Nothing better was awaiting us in XX century. After devastation of 2nd World War, our country's experiences with death camps, extermination of  Polish population by Nazists and the Soviets, the Warsaw Uprising,  Polish artists had many reason to show those horrible storiesin their art and to give back some memories to all victims. After XIX century examples of funeral and mourning themes, we have continuation of this in XX century. In my artworks I try connect more with those XIX century moods, which I describe more like Slovian esthetics special for Polish culture with strong accent for peasants, village, countryfield life, etc. With best examples of masterpieces of arts like 'Death of Ellenai' by Jacek Malczewski, 'Mother died' by Aleksander Kotsis or 'Peasant’s Coffin' painted by Aleksander Gierymski."
