For Barbara Hepworth, drawing was 'a particularly exciting adventure' – a practice intimately connected to her sculpture and to the way she understood the world around her. Michael Bird discusses the different dynamics of Hepworth's abstract and figure drawings, their roots in the ideals of mid-20th-century modernism, and their place in the new landscape of post-war Britain.

About

Michael Bird is a writer, art historian and broadcaster. His books include The St Ives Artists: A Biography of Place and Time and monographs on Sandra Blow, Bryan Wynter and Lynn Chadwick. His Children's History of Art and a monograph on the sculptor George Fullard are due out next year.
