AVANT PRIMITIVISM

ST MARK'S CHURCH HALLS

Between the pure unspoilt natural sounds of generating tones / notes of music via the acoustic; to the bending of and challenging of thoughts in new composition.

- AVANT PRIMITIVISM as a musical concept / idea explores the rawness of sound from the golden heart of performance and the folk tradition to the vigour and brashness of avant garde composition -

Interested in equal parts in natural forms and in the ragged, designed, projected new -

the AVANT and the PRIMITIVISM both embrace the wondrous and the mysterious art of music making and sound generation.

SOUND INSTALLATION :::

'DWELLER ON THE THRESHOLD'

by Bjorn Hatleskog + Kevin Quigley

OPENING

6pm - 8pm

A new collaborative sound installation work placed in the unique space of an octagonal room.

Bjorn Hatleskog is a musician and a sculptor.

As in both his music and performance works Bjorn continues in this sculptural works to explore concepts of the finite and infinite in sound / music.

Bjorn likes to play around with the ideas of limits and constraints in making music - through using ingeniously constructed 'machines' // automations.

For this piece 'Dweller on the threshold' Bjorn and Kevin were inspired by the spiralling feelings one gets in the octagonal room (the installation space) and it's 'enclosing' inhibiting almost trance like nature of the space -

12 is the number for completion on a lot of the worlds mystical // religious traditions - 12 is also the number of the amount of harmoniums Bjorn has brought together and installed for this piece 'Dweller on the threshold'.

Inspired by the idea of the infinitely droning, reverberating sound of the harmoniums - Kevin has created a series of wooden panels depicting layered images from the traditions of mystical painting - such as the Kabbala // the Jain images of hell/heaven // Dante's divine comedy - the spiralling downward inferno or upwards forever cascading paradiso -

These images combined with the sound piece take the viewer / listener into a sheltered environment (sanctuary)..... but it is their choice to cascade upward and to spiral downward - this is the nature of the mystical Kabbala - perhaps the 'Dweller of the threshold' can help them? -

Kevin Quigley is a visual artist and musician.
