About

‘Willing’ is an exhibition of Jack Dickens and Aurelia Coster’s work. The intent is to combine figuration and abstraction within one display. The inspiration of the work is spontaneity, as there is no vision of an end-point at the start of the process. The work wishes to explore the moment when illustrated on a two-dimensional surface. Willing shows diversity through the combination of figuration and abstraction and gives the viewer the opportunity to decide which approach resonates most with them, whether it be representational or not.

The works are rooted in the tradition of image making on a picture plane. However, the reimagining of original processes, such as drawing as paint and digital painting challenge what is expected within common practice to present alternative methods of portrayal.

Willing intends to be a non-critical, affirmative exhibition that lets the works exist without any need for a context or target and wishes to let creativity and draughtsmanship take the focus. This is done in the hope that people will be able to relate to the works on their own, without the need to understand them in a logical or objective way, feeling comfortable to pass their own judgement.
