Aural Constancies of the Morphic Unit: residency with Tom Slater exploring perception of sonic signatures. Open: 24th - 29th 12-5pm Preview event: 25th of March, 6:30 — 9pm with performances by Emmanuel Spinelli, Matt Lewis, Jeremy Keenan and Tom Slater at 8pm. Tom Slater interacts with materials as morphic units, a term used in biochemistry to describe a system of features that make up an entity. A sensual experience of morphological features delineates our observation ”¨of these objects; size, shape and material on a macro scale, down to a micro scale; from molecular through to the subatomic. Despite infinite and changing configurations of morphological features, objects are imbued with certain perceptual constancies. It is these constancies that ”¨allow people to perceive the size, shape and material of objects simply by listening to them move against other objects and reflect sound. Through experimentation in sound emitting kinetic sculpture, amplification, sonic manipulation and performance Tom Slater explores these aural constancies. Throughout his residency at The Pigeon Wing Slater will work on a large scale installation of sound emitting kinetic sculptures that draw inspiration from the convoluted machines of Rube Goldberg, to fill the gallery with their amplified sonic character.
