This month saw the release of “Atmosphere”, a new piece of video artwork, curated by an international team of artists, dancers and composers to help break down gender, age and disability barriers.
About
The artwork was created by Chrissie Cochrane, a blind and transgendered artist, who has been living in the UK for more than 60 years, from her native New Zealand. Her vision was to create a piece that would inspire those who face or have had to overcome adversity, through showcasing that talent of any form transcends any gender or disability barriers.
Chrissie enlisted the help of internationally renowned collaborators to help bring her idea to life. Working with Fer Ribes, a well-known Spanish audio-visual creator from Madrid, the direction for the visuals lead the composition to a magical and mythological journey through space. To accompany Cochrane’s vibrant music, the video includes a festival of bright colours, lighting effects and evocative imagery to show the power that comes with overcoming physical and mental barriers.
In keeping with Ribes’s vibrant palette for the visuals, Cochrane enlisted French choreographer Laura Quiles to incorporate the medium of dance.
Pascal Chahin also acted as Chrissie Cochrane’s ‘eyes’ when turning the first act of the piece into still imagery, with the help of Ribes’s directional vision, to illustrate the emotion and strength of the piece.
Chrissie Cochrane comments, “For me the phrase ‘it’s not possible’ doesn’t exist and I wanted to reflect that mentality through Atmosphere. No matter what stands in your way, creativity is open to all and allows expression for all. For me, Atmosphere was a great way to break down barriers around gender and disability, but also physical borders and work with a fantastically skilled group of international artists to bring this piece to life.
I hope that for anyone who interacts with this piece, that it inspires them to always be themselves and that no matter what barriers they have in their way, they’re able to achieve their goals.”
"Atmosphere" is the first part of an ongoing series that Cochrane is looking to seek funding for to complete as part of her legacy, and the audio for the whole suite is currently available on streaming sites.
The video was filmed in Madrid at the end of June.
