About

ATLANTIC OBSERVATIONS

“The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea.”
Isak Dinesen

Atlantic Observations is a photographic exhibition featuring work inspired by the Atlantic Ocean. Photographers Mickey Smith, Allan Wilson, Andy Lawrence, Jack Johns and Alastair Sopp are a collection of nomadic visual artists, linked over their lives and careers by a love of the sea, now all residing in south-west Cornwall.

This group exhibition will also open the summer programme at PZ Gallery as the space finds new life and a new voice in the art community, two years after the death of legendary photographer Charlie Roff.

The works on show are varied yet similar, contrasting yet comparable. An underlying current of experiences shared; moments captured in different places, at different times, undeniably linked.

"The exhibition is all about collaboration and perspective." says Andy Lawrence. "Though raised in different hemispheres, we've been friends for decades, with the Atlantic Ocean our common ground. Our visions of it undoubtedly similar, yet subtly different."

The exhibition will also hold a poignancy in exhibiting and celebrating the work of the late Alastair Sopp, whose sublime eye for subtle lines and appreciation of beauty in unexpected forms continues to inspire.

For Mickey Smith, whose artistic journeys have led him to critical acclaim as a photographer, cinematographer, director and musician, it is a welcome return to an vast archive of experiences captured over 10 years as part of a larger personal project, Decade.

Contrasting Mickey's dark seascapes are Allan Wilson's ethereal interpretations, drawing influence from the 19th century impressionism that inspired and bewildered him as a young boy. Jack Johns' immersive imagery displays his unique eye for storytelling, and is testament to his growth from local surfer to commercial lifestyle photographer, while Andy's Lawrence's series of diptychs focus on movement and mood, tone and timing.

Atlantic Observations will open on the evening of July 19th at PZ Gallery, from 6pm-9pm with support from Tinkture Gin, Sea Buck Tonic and St Ives Brewery. The exhibition will then be open from daily from 10am-4pm until Sunday July 28th. Viewing appointments outside of this time can be made by emailing atlanticobservations@gmail.com
