-------------------------------------------

Solitude is a critical element to Payne's creative process as it opens up space for the artist to calm her energy, still her thoughts, and move with intention. Each painting begins with the release of pent-up energy expelled through lines of black charcoal or ink. It’s in the following stillness that pearlescent pigments brush across cold-pressed watercolor paper, in which one can behold various hues as the angle of illumination changes. Each meditative painting results in dynamic evocations of movement and emotion.

In Stillness, the artist is present.

“...an evaluation of solitude as both burden and gift, and as the foundation for all genuine work. Around this center they gravitate, and to it they return again and again from their meditations on the two great subjects that naturally concern any gifted young person: creativity and love.” - Rainer Maria Rilke
