Glasshouse Residency 1:
Joe Orr, Bryony Gillard, Alice Gale-Feeny
16 May – 11 June 2017

About

The New Art Gallery Walsall and Eastside Projects are working in partnership to offer Glasshouse, two opportunities for five artists to spend time in residence in the Gallery’s Artists’ Studio this summer.

Glasshouse will provide resources for participants to develop new work for public presentation within a supportive group context, and aims to develop stronger links between artists and arts organisations in the Midlands, South West and North West of England.

Residency 1 has been developed in collaboration with Spike Island (Bristol) and Bluecoat (Liverpool). During the next month, three artists from different cities will share work space in the Artists’ Studio:

Alice Gale-Feeny (ESP member)

Bryony Gillard (Spike Associate)

Joe Orr (Bluecoat Affiliate)

Building on previous ESP group residencies in 2012, 2013 and 2015, the artists will work individually but also collaborate on a final presentation to be viewed through the Studio’s large glass window from 12 June – 1 July 2017.

Alice Gale-Feeny is based in Nottingham and works with video, performance and writing. She often uses direct translations from unscripted voice as a device for exploring our experience of things as it unfolds in real-time. During the residency, Gale-Feeny will continue to develop ideas around how space is shared and understood, from the perspective of the individual as well as the group.

Bryony Gillard is an artist and curator based in Bristol. She works across performance, writing, sound and moving image. She will use the residency to focus on improvisation, movement and choreography, collaborating with local dance practitioners and performers to explore relationships between place, female experience, retreat and resistance.

Joe Fletcher Orr is an artist and founder of CACTUS, a non-profit gallery in Liverpool. Orr’s sculptures, performances and installations use humour to undermine the ‘seriousness’ of the art world and the authority of the art object, something the artist traces to his experience of visiting art galleries with his father as a young boy. He will use the residency to research ideas of family, love and relationships, and hopes for the new work to be heavily influenced by new relationships that will form during the residency.

Stop by the studio this summer to meet the artists and see work take shape.
