About
Harold and Maude is a 1971 cult classic black comedy accompanied by a Cat Stevens soundtrack. It follows the development of a friendship and unlikely romance between 19-year-old Harold, and 79-year-old Maude. Harold is a solitary young man, intent on resisting the efforts of his exasperated wealthy mother to control his life, and obsessed by death; he stages his own fake suicides and drives a hearse. Maude, on the other hand, is obsessed by life, with a devil-may-care attitude that has little respect for the law; she is skilled at stealing cars and will swiftly uproot an ailing tree on public property to re-plant it in the forest. Maude shows Harold the pleasures of art and music (including how to play banjo), and teaches him how to make the most of his time on earth.
This film has been selected by artist and CAST studio holder Lucy Willow. Lucy is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at Falmouth University, whose work and research deals with themes of death and grief.
