About
Following his recent exhibitions at Gallery Oldham - landscapes for the Turning Earth and On The Edge of Arcadia - Oldham-born artist Alan Rankle has chosen a number of paintings for display from the Gallery's permanent Art Collection. As a teenager in Oldham, Alan was inspired by paintings by Frank Auerbach and Sandra Blow and first came across major Victorian artists like Millais, Turner and Palmer.
This exhibition features a small number of Alan's paintings next to some of his earliest influences.
Also on show are paintings and prints by local students and schoolchildren who, in turn, have been inspired by Alan's Expressionist landscape paintings.
Alan Rankle, Landscapes for the Turning Earth: Paintings 1986 - 2006, the first major retrospective of Alan's paintings, is on show at Gallery Oldham until 3 march 2007. His paintings combine elements of traditional landscape painting with his own distinctive style, thick layers of paint and dynamic washes of colour.
