About Marcia Michael: I Am Now You - Mother
Michael uses photography and oral history to retrieve lost and reimagined narratives of her matrilineal ancestry, creating an intimate dialogue between mother and daughter in order visualise history from her mother’s memory.

In the artist’s own words: ‘my desire is to recover a visual and aural narrative of my matrilineal history and reunite the present with the past. The body is testament to the refusal to forget. The body, my mother’s body, is all of my histories’.

About Franklyn Rodgers: Devotion – a Portrait of Loretta
The large-scale portraits in Devotion recognise the significance of close-knit relationships: mother and son, and between friends. Rodgers’ photographs draw inspiration from work of French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, who claimed that our individual obligations and morality are found in the recognition of the suffering and mortality of others. Identity becomes both a departure and return to the self.

This exhibition is an act of devotion to his mother and the intimate familial moments of love, care, tenderness and affection in these relationships.

Also featured is Rodgers’ portrait of Baroness Doreen Lawrence. This is the first work in a major new commission by Autograph, commemorating women from diverse cultural backgrounds whose lives are devoted to seeking political and social justice.
