Artist Talk: Gary James McQueen and Derrick Santini

Miart Gallery London is pleased to present Relativity Part II, a collective exhibition featuring artists working with various media, including painting, sculpture, light boxes, and lenticular prints. Primarily focusing on their most recent works, the exhibition runs from April 20th to May 20th, 2023.

For the first time, Miart Gallery London decided to collaborate with Gary James McQueen and Derrick Santini, established British artits, by setting up a space for them where they could express their ideas and elaborate themes of their artworks during the exhibition's opening night.

Gary James McQueen is an artist and fashion designer, a nephew of Alexander McQueen, a fashion icon, with whom the artists explored his artistic potential by being inspired by his uncle's oeuvre. By keeping his uncle's legacy and constantly pushing himself and his creativity to go beyond boundaries, McQueen experiments with various methods of incorporating art into his work to create optical illusion designs that forms a unique niche. Utilizing his natural artistic abilities, Gary James McQueen has channeled his spirit into his artwork by discovering the potential of lenticular printing that fuses the physical and sculptural dimensions. 

Derrick Santini's style has progressed quickly towards voyeurism, finding pleasure in capturing stolen moments. While he initially found that still photography could not grab the dynamism of his ideas, he discovered that the lenticular technique brought his visions to life and expanded his artistic oeuvre. Santini's works explore themes of love, sex, and desire, combining them with the symbolism of nature and methodology. His hypnotic illusions of depth and space are given life through this technique. Santini's lenticular artwork has received critical acclaim and attracted collectors such as Damien Hirst and Adele.

Relativity Part II features work by talented contemporary artists from the UK and worldwide, displaying various mediums such as paintings, photographs, lenticular prints, light boxes, and sculptures. The exhibition incorporates diverse and distinct themes that cover topics like human conduct in the digital era, the harmony of nature,  and popular culture, within one space. This collection gives a chance to see unique perspectives on familiar matters through the eyes of established and emerging artists.
