James Fisher and Karen David will discuss Fisher’s new series Flotilla - A pleasure trip with Yuru-Kyara.
Will Yuru-Kyara be seen as Japanese heritage in the next century?
About
Will their stories be handed down around the world like the Minotaur or Frankenstein’s Monster?
Yuru-Kyara are not folk creatures like yokai, but made by institutions or companies.
They are very friendly and hypnotic. How does this aspect of Japanese psyche infuse with Fisher’s work? The floating boats will take you to mysterious destinations.
Speakers:
James Fisher trained at the Royal College of Art and is based in Gloucestershire. Fisher describes his paintings as ghost schema: assemblages of images and surfaces that generate spectral encounters. His exhibitions include Plaything with Denise de Cordova at the Blyth Gallery at Imperial College, London in 2017 and Doppelgänger at the Eagle Gallery, London in 2016.
Karen David is a London-based artist, curator and lecturer with a studio focus on mythmaking, fictional narrative, communes and para-anthropology. She was trained at Wimbledon College of the Arts and is a PhD candidate at the University of Worcester. Her exhibitions include Crystal Visions, at CIMCOT, London in 2017 and Pure Reason Tint of Violet, at VITRINE Bermondsey Square in 2014.
